- Inbound messages are capped at one MiB; downstream queues share an eight MiB
budget per session, retained through the write. Never increase count limits
without checking the byte bound.
- Select the Rustls provider explicitly in the downstream connector; workspace
features enable both providers, so automatic selection panics on `wss://`.
- Dropping a downstream route cancels its task, including pending dials/writes.
- Every DSS replica handles only its own sockets. No distributed route
ownership or singleton deployment is required.

Record downstream dial timing and failure on the trace.

The new connect helper runs inside pump’s connection-lifetime span. The trace therefore cannot isolate dial time. If TLS validation or the handshake fails, pump discards the returned error and records only timed_out = false. Add a child dial span and record its outcome and error without sending the error to the client. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines: “Every new or changed flow must be debuggable from its trace alone” and “Record outcome on the span.”

Review comment at @crates/sync_router/src/outbound/do_downstream.rs around lines
131 - 132:
Add a child dial span around the connect call in pump so its duration is
distinct from the connection-lifetime span. Record the dial outcome and
connection error on that span, while keeping the error out of the client
response.
