Why

DSS enables both Rustls crypto providers through workspace feature unification. Automatic provider selection panics when the sync router opens a secure downstream socket, leaving document subscriptions unanswered while the outer socket still responds to heartbeats.

What

  • Select the AWS-LC provider explicitly in the downstream WebSocket adapter, retaining WebPKI certificate validation, frame limits, and the dial timeout.
  • Exercise the TLS handshake and failed-subscription notification in a regression test that reproduces the previous panic.
  • Document the provider requirement for future transport changes.

Explicitly configure the downstream client when workspace features enable both Rustls providers. Preserve certificate verification and report failed handshakes to subscribers.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed secure WebSocket connections to downstream services by explicitly selecting the TLS provider and using trusted root certificates. This prevents connection failures when multiple TLS providers are available, while preserving the existing connection timeout and message size limits.

The workspace adds webpki-roots, and sync_router adds rustls and webpki-roots dependencies. The downstream WebSocket dial now uses an explicit Rustls connector configured with AWS-LC and WebPKI roots. The 10-second timeout and WebSocket message and frame size limits remain in place. A new test checks for a RouterSubscribeFailed response after a TLS handshake.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b779b

Downstream TLS now selects AWS-LC. Dial tracing and successful-handshake coverage should be improved; no newly introduced runtime failure was established.

Add a successful secure-downstream subscription test.

The local E2E helper connects to the outer connection gateway. It does not assert a sync-router subscription. Existing sync-router success tests use http:// downstream fixtures. The new TLS test stops after the first TLS record and asserts RouterSubscribeFailed.

Add a test that completes a valid secure TLS and WebSocket handshake, then asserts RouterSubscribed.

Record downstream dial timing and failure on the trace.

The new connect helper runs inside pump’s connection-lifetime span. The trace therefore cannot isolate dial time. If TLS validation or the handshake fails, pump discards the returned error and records only timed_out = false. Add a child dial span and record its outcome and error without sending the error to the client. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines: “Every new or changed flow must be debuggable from its trace alone” and “Record outcome on the span.”
