What Changed

Adds a migration path for users who registered ECC 1.x through settings.json: retire the legacy marketplace with supported Claude Code controls, merge the current ecc declaration, and verify the registered location and catalog name. The guide also checks the installed legacy plugin independently of marketplace registration and removes any surviving installation at its applicable scope. The declaration-only example preserves the user's choice of whether to enable the plugin.

Why This Change

Uninstalling the old plugin can leave a persistent legacy marketplace declaration behind. The guide now covers removal order and its effects on installed plugins/data, settings scopes, and careful inspection of temporary clones without blanket registry/cache deletion or claiming to fix Claude Code's cleanup behavior.

Fixes #3678.

Testing Done

  • markdownlint docs/MIGRATION-1X-TO-2.0.md passed.
  • node tests/docs/install-identifiers.test.js: 68 passed.
  • git diff --check passed.
  • Confirmed claude plugin list --help and claude plugin uninstall --help against the official command reference.
  • Cross-checked the declaration against the current README/marketplace manifest and the list/remove guidance against the linked official Claude Code command reference.

Explanation

The changed migration guide addresses the coding requirements in [#3678]. It documents backup and merge of settings.json, replacement of everything-claude-code with ecc, preservation of unrelated settings and plugin enablement, and supported marketplace retirement after plugin inspection. It checks installed plugins independently, explains removal effects, verifies the marketplace name and location, and requires a final plugin-state check. It also gives scoped checks for abandoned temp_git* clones and prohibits blanket registry or active-cache deletion. [#3678] requests migration documentation and states no additional automated-test requirement.

Minor · Uninstall the old plugin when its marketplace entry is absent. · MIGRATION-1X-TO-2.0.md:36

docs/MIGRATION-1X-TO-2.0.md:36
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Uninstall the old plugin when its marketplace entry is absent.

When everything-claude-code is missing from claude plugin marketplace list, step 3 skips marketplace remove. In the settings.json path, that removal is the only step that uninstalls plugins from the marketplace. Removing the declaration does not uninstall the installed plugin. Claude Code loads installed plugins from installed_plugins.json and the cache at session start. An installed plugin counts as enabled unless its enabledPlugins entry is false. The old everything-claude-code@everything-claude-code plugin can therefore remain loaded and duplicate skills, commands, and hooks.

Step 2 lists plugins "associated with the old marketplace." That list may not show the old plugin when the marketplace is absent. Add a /plugin list check after the backup step. If the old plugin is still installed, uninstall it.

🐛 Suggested fix
- Use the name reported by `claude plugin marketplace list`, not the repository URL. If the old entry is already absent, skip removal. See Claude Code's [marketplace command reference](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/plugins/cli-reference#plugin-marketplace-remove) for scope options and removal effects.
+ Use the name reported by `claude plugin marketplace list`, not the repository URL. If the old entry is already absent, skip removal. Then run `/plugin list`. If `everything-claude-code@everything-claude-code` is still installed, complete the backup in step 2 and run `/plugin uninstall everything-claude-code@everything-claude-code`. See Claude Code's [marketplace command reference](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/plugins/cli-reference#plugin-marketplace-remove) for scope options and removal effects.

Addressed the outside-diff finding in 644a3f0: the orphaned legacy plugin is now checked with /plugin list even when its marketplace is absent. Only marketplace removal is skipped; any surviving installation is uninstalled after backup, with the shell command scoped to the installation shown by claude plugin list --json. The final restart check also requires the legacy plugin to be absent. The registered-marketplace retirement path remains intact.

Checked the official list/uninstall reference and local CLI help. Markdown lint, all 68 install-identifier checks, and git diff --check passed.

Require ownership and usage checks before deleting the leftover folder.

The absence of the legacy plugin from /plugin list does not establish that the directory is abandoned or unused. A reader can delete a registered marketplace, an installed plugin path, or a directory used by an active Claude Code session. Apply the same path, Git, and process checks required for temporary clones.

Suggested fix

Addressed the outside-diff cleanup finding in 3b29de8. The leftover-folder section now requires all three checks before deletion: the path is neither a registered marketplace nor an installed plugin path, its Git remote/configuration supports it being an abandoned legacy clone, and no active Claude Code session or install/update process uses it. Uncertain folders must stay in place.

Markdown lint, all 68 install-identifier checks, and git diff --check passed. This was a documentation check; no real plugin directories were deleted.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR before scanning plugin storage.

When CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is set and CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_CACHE_DIR is not, the documented ~/.claude/plugins path is not the effective root. The repository resolver uses <CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR>/plugins, so this scan can miss temporary clones under marketplaces/ and cache/.

Suggested fix
-If plugin storage is unexpectedly large, first resolve the plugin root: use the effective `CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_CACHE_DIR` value configured in your shell or the `env` key of the applicable settings files, or `~/.claude/plugins` when no override is set.

Major · Remove the legacy enablement entry before uninstalling the plugin. · MIGRATION-1X-TO-2.0.md:38

docs/MIGRATION-1X-TO-2.0.md:38
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the legacy enablement entry before uninstalling the plugin.

If enabledPlugins still enables everything-claude-code@everything-claude-code, claude plugin uninstall can fail with settings_still_on and leave the plugin installed. This step runs before step 4 removes that entry. Move the enablement cleanup before this uninstall, or instruct the reader to retry the uninstall after step 4. (code.claude.com)

Addressed the configuration-root finding in 056de9f. Plugin storage lookup now uses CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_CACHE_DIR first, then <CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR>/plugins, then the default ~/.claude/plugins. The guide also clarifies that CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR can come from the shell, user settings, or managed settings, and retains the absolute-path requirement for JSON values.

Cross-checked the repository resolver and the official environment reference. Markdown lint and git diff --check passed.

Addressed the uninstall-order finding in b8c54da. The guide now records the old enabled/disabled choice before marketplace removal and clears the legacy enabledPlugins entry before uninstalling a remaining installation. It also explains that settings_still_on leaves the plugin installed and requires fixing the reported settings file, then retrying the scoped uninstall. Step 4 uses the recorded choice for the new identifier.

Cross-checked the official uninstall reference, including the v2.1.282 requirement for that settings check. Markdown lint and git diff --check passed.
