Why

An agent asked to create four tasks took 59 s, 16 tool calls and 279 SDK operations (MACRO-01a18097-6bbf-7364-b3dc-3906d7a0a931). The turn's trace splits as follows:

Phase Time
Model (10 chat_streaming calls) 41.8 s, of which 16.5 s is the first call (15.9 s to first chunk, before any tool)
Tools 17.1 s, of which ExecuteCode is 16.7 s across 5 runs
Harness and transport (gaps between spans) ~0.5 s

The SDK operations came from the programs, not the model:

  • macro.initiatives.list() returns bare handles, so reading 22 names took 23 requests, even though the list response already carries every name.
  • Task names came from task.name(), which loads each whole document: 47, then 18, then 98 Read document calls.
  • One program returned more than one 256 KiB output frame and failed with invalid or oversized process output after 11.6 s of completed reads. The agent had to rerun a smaller version.
  • Creating the four tasks took 25 operations: create, then a separate setProperty each for project, assignees, status and due date, then a read back.
  • The remaining tool calls were GitHub search and connector discovery for pull requests the tasks mention, which creating them doesn't need.

What

  • SDK, macro.initiatives.summaries(): every initiative with its name and update time, taken from the one list request.
  • SDK, macro.tasks.summaries(tasks): name, owner, update time and completion for many tasks in one /documents/preview request, returned in input order. Tasks that no longer exist are left out. This endpoint was in the coverage skip list.
  • SDK, macro.tasks.create: now takes initiative, assignees and dueDate and sends them as the create's propertyValues.
    • Sending any property value replaces the service's defaults (creator assigned, Not started). So the SDK spells those defaults out, and assigns the caller via users.me() when assignees is omitted.
    • assignees: [] leaves the task unassigned.
    • Calls without these options send null as before.
  • Agent docs:
    • The namespace class docs now say to read names in batches, create a task in one call, and not research what a task describes unless asked. They are written so the rule survives the catalog's first-sentence cut.
    • Shared code-mode program guidance says the same.
    • The Deno SDK bundle, documentation.json and the SDK reference are regenerated.
  • Code execution:
    • Limits gains max_result_bytes, default 64 KiB.
    • The bootstrap measures the result before emitting it. An oversized data becomes {truncated, bytes, limitBytes, outline, preview, hint}, where outline is a type outline and preview is the start of the JSON. reviews is kept.
    • The 256 KiB frame limit remains the backstop, with an error that names it.
  • Tracing:
    • code_mode.execution (agent session id, execution id, source bytes, status, activity count, result bytes) wraps each session execution.
    • code_execution.run has code_execution.queue and code_execution.process children and records the outcome. Queue wait and process time now show separately under execute_tool ExecuteCode.

Measured with the real SDK against a stub service sized like the trace (22 initiatives, 77/16/5 tasks), running the traced programs and their equivalents with the new methods:

Step Before After
Initiative names 23 requests 1
Names of every task in 3 initiatives 100 6
Create 4 tasks with initiative, assignee, status, due date 25 4 (5 with the me() lookup)

Decisions

  • No backend change. Both batch endpoints already existed, and create already accepted propertyValues. The web app relies on a missing assignee entry meaning unassigned, so the defaults are filled in the SDK, not the service.
  • /documents/preview returns names for document ids without a per-document permission check. It is the same endpoint the app uses to label mentions. The SDK only exposes it for task handles a caller already holds.
  • The 64 KiB result budget sits between the 32 KiB docs budget and the 256 KiB frame. Every successful run in the trace returned under 8 KiB.
  • The service logs and skips a property value it rejects at create, as before, so the task is still created. Surfacing those failures is left for later.

Follow-ups

  • The 15.9 s first model call (the time to the first tool) is model reasoning over the prompt and docs. This change only shrinks what later calls read.
  • Make create report rejected property values instead of logging them.
  • A live replay of the original prompt was not possible on this machine because Docker address pools are exhausted, so no local stack could start.

…roperties

Why: an agent creating four tasks spent 120+ requests hydrating every
initiative and task document just to read names, then set each task's
project, assignees and status with separate writes after creating it.

What: macro.initiatives.summaries() returns names from the one list
request; macro.tasks.summaries(tasks) reads names, owner and completion
through the batch preview endpoint. tasks.create takes initiative,
assignees and dueDate and sends them as the create's property values,
spelling out the creator-assigned, Not started defaults those replace.
…tion

Why: code-mode agents read each task's name() and wrote task properties
one by one because the SDK catalog offered nothing else.

What: regenerate the Deno SDK bundle and agent documentation for the new
summaries and task create options, and tell programs to read names in
batches and create tasks with their properties in one call.
Why: a program that returned more than one 256 KiB output frame failed
with 'invalid or oversized process output', discarding 11 seconds of
completed reads and telling the agent nothing about what to fix.

What: the bootstrap measures the result against a new 64 KiB
max_result_bytes limit and replaces an oversized data value with its
size, a type outline, the start of its JSON and a hint to return less,
keeping reviews intact. The frame limit stays the backstop, now with an
error that names it.
Why: a named options type made the TaskNamespace.create reference show
only 'opts: TaskOptions', so agents needed a second ReadCodeDocs call
to learn the initiative, assignees and dueDate fields.

What: inline the options object again, as before, and regenerate the
agent documentation and SDK reference.
Why: an ExecuteCode tool span showed only its total time, so a slow run
could not be split into waiting for a process slot, running Deno, and
the size of what it returned.

What: a code_mode.execution span records the session, execution,
status, activity count and result size; code_execution.run records the
outcome with code_execution.queue and code_execution.process children.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added batched summaries for initiatives and tasks, including names and relevant update or completion details.
    • Task creation now supports setting an initiative, assignees, and due date. New tasks start as Not started; assignees default to the creator unless an empty list is provided.
    • Large execution results are now returned as an outline and data preview, while preserving other response details.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance for batched summaries, task creation options, and execution result limits.

The SDK adds batched initiative and task summaries and extends task creation to set initiative, assignees, and due date. The execution service adds a configurable result-size limit. The Deno bootstrap summarizes results that exceed the limit while preserving other result fields, and execution tasks gain tracing spans.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c8c7c

The change batches name reads and creates tasks with initiative, assignees and due date in one call, and it bounds oversized execution results. Remaining issues are minor: an edge-case validation gap on the result limit, trace context loss when spans are filtered, and missing trace fields. Tasks created with a rejected initiative or assignee can still report success, but that behavior predates this change and is a listed follow-up. Merging is reasonable once the maintainers have seen these items.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Record the task-summary batch in the trace.

This new batch boundary records neither the number of requested task IDs nor the number of returned summaries. The existing SDK observer emits operation status events, not trace fields. Add an operation span with counts and outcome so a slow or incomplete batch is diagnosable from its trace. As per coding guidelines, “Record the IDs you will search by ... and sizes/counts as fields.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the caller span when the execution span is disabled.

If the execution span is disabled while the caller span remains enabled, .instrument(span) does not preserve the caller context for the spawned task. Apply span.clone().or_current() in both services. Record outcome fields on the original span.

Reserve space for the result frame.

When max_result_bytes equals max_frame_bytes, a result JSON value at the permitted size exceeds the frame limit after {"type":"result","value":...} is added. The bridge then rejects that result with FailureCode::Limit. Validate against the frame budget minus the serialized frame overhead, and test a result at the accepted boundary.

Record result truncation on the execution trace.

When bounded replaces data, the supplied code_execution.run span still records only a successful outcome. Record a truncation flag and the original byte count on that span so an operator can identify this result change from the trace without recording result content. As per coding guidelines, “Every new or changed flow must be debuggable from its trace alone.”

summaries() adds a new bulk-read flow without an operation span or result count. Record the initiative count and request outcome without recording names. Why: the ExecuteCode description is embedded in the generated tool
types, so CI's generated-code check failed after the guidance changed.

What: regenerate them with generate-dcs-tools.
