perf(md): make undo fast in large collaborative documents - #9013
Undo in a large collaborative markdown document froze the editor for
seconds. #7205 removed duplicate mirror rebuilds; the freeze was still there.
Profiling undo in a 6,000-paragraph document (3.5 s per undo) showed the
reconcile was not rebuilding the document: it already touched only changed
nodes. It was quadratic. Several lookups each cost O(n) per node:
Cost (6,000 paragraphs, one undo)
Before
After
$applyChildren: parent.getChildren().indexOf(node) for every child
2.1 s
~0
Caret → Loro container: scan every container, twice per sync
0.3 s
~0
Mirror: read the document twice per native batch
0.5 s
0.17 s
Undo, keydown to settled editor
3.5 s
0.46 s
Restoring a thousand deleted paragraphs also re-registered every container
in the document, because each native batch re-walked whole subtrees.
The caret scan also ran on every keystroke: typing nine characters into the
6,000-paragraph document went from 3.5 s to 0.64 s.
What
collaboration/reconcile.ts: walk children by sibling pointer; remove by
walking old and live children together; insert runs of new nodes with one
splice each. Which nodes are touched is unchanged.
collaboration/mapping.ts: find the caret's container by walking the Loro
tree along the Lexical node's path and checking the node id there. Only
positions shifted by local-only nodes (draft comment marks) still scan.
loro-mirror: subtrees with no tree schema read as one native toJSON;
native batches register only containers the registry hasn't seen.
Explicit register calls still walk everything.
collaboration/undo.ts: spans editor.undo / editor.redo (document.id, editor.node_count, history.applied), with children editor.history.loro (Loro undo plus the mirror read) and editor.history.apply (until the reconciled update commits). LoroManager exposes documentId for this.
collaboration/browser-test/: a backend-free fixture with the real CollabProvider, sync engine, and Loro undo manager over a
4,000-paragraph document (about the length of Moby-Dick). It times undoing
typing (budget 600 ms, measured ~300 ms) and undoing the deletion of 1,000
paragraphs (budget 1.5 s, measured ~0.8–0.9 s). On main this document
doesn't finish opening within two minutes, so both tests fail there.
reconcile.test.ts: removals, reorders, edits, and runs of inserts in one
reconcile, keeping surviving nodes.
Docs: apps/web/AGENTS.md, docs/agent-guide/documents.md, and packages/loro-mirror/AGENTS.md.
Decisions
The browser test doesn't run in CI, like the repo's other browser-test configs. Budgets are about 2× the local measurements so a
slower machine still passes while the old quadratic paths fail.
The mirror still reads the whole document once per native batch
(~170 ms at 6,000 paragraphs). Building mirror state from the event diffs
would remove that, but it's a larger change to loro-mirror, so it's left
as a follow-up. In the 1,000-paragraph case about 400 ms is Loro's own UndoManager.undo() re-creating containers, which this branch can't
change.
The apply span ends on the next collaboration-tagged update. The
reconcile runs after the sync engine's lock is acquired, in a later
microtask, so the span can't wrap it directly. A remote update landing in
between would end it early, which is rare.
The caret lookup still has a full scan, used only when the walk along
the node's path finds a different node, so the result is always checked.
Applying a Loro state to the editor looked up each child's position with
`parent.getChildren().indexOf(node)`, so every undo or remote change
cost time quadratic in the number of top-level blocks: two of the three
and a half seconds an undo took in a 6,000-paragraph document.
Walk the parent's children by sibling pointer, remove by walking the old
children alongside the live ones, and insert runs of new nodes with one
splice each. Only changed, moved, inserted, or removed nodes are touched,
as before.
After every sync and every undo the caret is converted to Loro cursors,
which scanned every container in the document to find the one holding
the caret's node. In large documents this cost hundreds of milliseconds
per keystroke and per undo.
Walk the Loro tree along the Lexical node's position and check the node
id there. Only positions shifted by local-only nodes (draft comment
marks) still scan, and that scan now skips deleted containers.
Each native batch read the document twice (`doc.toJSON()`, then again
container by container through the schema) and re-walked every subtree
under each event target to register containers. Undoing a large edit
re-registered the whole document.
Read subtrees without a tree schema as one native `toJSON`, and let
native batches skip containers the registry already knows; their
descendants were registered with them or arrive as events of their own.
Explicit `register` calls still walk everything.
Undo had no span, so a slow undo could not be found or broken down.
`editor.undo` / `editor.redo` record the document id and node count;
`editor.history.loro` covers Loro's undo manager and the mirror read,
and `editor.history.apply` lasts until the reconciled editor update
commits. `LoroManager` exposes its document id for this.
A backend-free browser fixture runs the real CollabProvider, sync
engine, and Loro undo manager over a 4,000-paragraph document and times
undoing typing and undoing the deletion of a thousand paragraphs
against budgets. Before this branch the document did not finish opening
within two minutes.
Improved collaborative document undo and reconciliation for large Markdown documents.
Tests
Added browser regression checks for undoing edits and restoring deleted paragraphs in a 4,000-paragraph document.
Documentation
Added guidance for testing large-document undo performance and reviewing related telemetry.
The changes update Loro-to-Lexical node lookup and child reconciliation. They add telemetry spans for undo and redo, expose the collaboration manager’s document ID, and add a browser fixture with timing tests for undo on a 4,000-paragraph document.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 53e09
The change is mergeable with follow-up: undo traces may remain incomplete during teardown, and the optional browser timing test may time out intermittently.

timeUndo sends the undo key after the test sees the Lexical state change. It does not wait for that change to reach Loro. Lexical updates are synced to Loro asynchronously, so the undo can run before the deletion or typing is in Loro's undo history. In that case the undo can apply nothing. armUndoTimer then waits for the editor text to equal the original text, and the test times out.
Expose a sync checkpoint from the fixture that resolves after the Lexical-to-Loro sync completes. Await it in timeUndo before pressing the undo key.

End pending undo traces when history is disposed.
If the editor unmounts or its sync engine stops before a collaboration-tagged update arrives, this listener never unregisters and neither editor.history.apply nor its parent span ends. Keep pending trace cleanup in registerLoroHistory and end those spans with a cancelled outcome during cleanup. The observability guideline requires the changed flow’s trace to show its outcome. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines: “Record outcome on the span (error status, retry count, cache hit/miss), so slow and failed paths can be filtered without logs.”
