fix(forms): make the builder, preview and respond views usable on phones - #9012
The form builder, preview and respond views were unusable at phone width (MACRO-01a1615b-5a04-7c13-8c91-4f99abfdefa4):
The Build / Responses / Settings tabs sat in the floating header next to the name and four actions, were crushed to a single letter, and could not be tapped (the header ignores taps outside islands, so the page underneath took them).
The bottom Add section / Add gate / Add meeting link row clipped its labels and overflowed the page sideways, and the page's New floated over the builder.
Long form names clipped (single-line input), and the database pill ran off the screen.
The respond route (live and Preview) ignored the safe area and the dock, so the title went under the status bar and the last question could not scroll clear of the Submit bar.
What
form-block.tsx: on touch devices the tabs render in the page (InlineFormHeader) instead of the floating header; desktop is unchanged.
builder-view.tsx: on touch, the add actions float above the dock through FloatRegion (accessory) as an Add menu built on the shared MobileCreateMenu, replacing New while Build is active and hiding with the keyboard. Desktop keeps the inline row; its buttons now wrap instead of clipping.
MobileCreateMenu.tsx: optional trigger label (defaults to New).
builder-chrome.tsx / draft-input.tsx: the form name is a DraftTextarea in a new singleLine mode (trimmed, never empty, Enter commits), so it wraps.
Button.tsx: the tooltip wrapper gets max-w-full, so a button's own max-w-full truncates its label (this is what pushed the database pill off-screen).
form-respond-page.tsx: the scroller reserves --safe-top and --mobile-content-inset-bottom on touch.
docs/agent-guide/forms.md: touch tabs and the Add menu.
Decisions:
Tabs move into the page rather than shrinking the header actions: the header has room for the name and actions, not a three-tab selector as well.
The add actions reuse the dock's unfolding create menu (the same pattern as New) rather than three pills, which do not fit at 390px.
The respond view's fixed Back/Next/Submit bar stays as is: anonymous respondents get a shell without the floating-region host, so moving it into FloatRegion would hide it there. Only its scroll clearance was fixed.

Follow-ups
Question insertion points between questions are hover-revealed; on touch they are invisible. Section/gate insertion is covered by the Add menu and questions by each section's Add question and Move to; making mid-list insertion visible on touch is left for a separate change.
A Button with a tooltip renders inside an inline-flex wrapper, so its
max-w-full resolved against the wrapper and long labels pushed past the
edge on narrow screens instead of truncating.
The name was a single-line input, so long names clipped at every width.
It is now a single-line textarea that wraps: trimmed, never empty, and
Enter commits, as before.
Touch puts the Build/Responses/Settings tabs in the page instead of the
floating header, where they were crushed to one letter and could not be
tapped. The builder's Add section/gate/meeting link row floats above
the dock as an Add menu in place of New, and on desktop the buttons wrap
instead of clipping. The respond route reserves the safe area and the
dock so the title and last question stay visible.
On touch devices, form-building actions are available in a floating menu above the dock while the builder is active and the keyboard is hidden. The menu offers Section, Gate, and Meeting link options.
Form names can be edited in a single-line field; pressing Enter saves the trimmed name, and whitespace-only edits are discarded.
On touch devices, Build, Responses, and Settings tabs appear below the floating header.
Bug Fixes
Improved tooltip width behavior for buttons, including full-width buttons.
Added safe-area spacing to the form response page on touch devices.
The form name now uses a single-line textarea mode with trimmed, non-empty commits. On touch devices, form pages omit the custom header and add touch-specific padding. The builder uses a floating creation menu with Section, Gate, and meeting-link actions when active and the virtual keyboard is hidden. The menu supports a custom label. Tooltip wrappers now receive an explicit width class.

L200: `/* Keyword values */
L201: field-sizing: content;
L202: field-sizing: fixed;
L203:
L224: ## 【91†Description】
L225:
L226: `field-sizing: content` overrides the default preferred sizing of form elements. This setting provides a way to configure text inputs to shrinkwrap their content and grow as more text is entered. They stop expanding when they reach maximum size limits (defined by the size of their containing element or set via CSS), at which point scrolling is required to view all the content.
L227: ### 【99†Elements affected by `field-sizing: content`】
L228:
L229: Specifically, `field-sizing` to `content` affects the following elements:
L230: * Form input types that accept direct text input from users. This includes 【100†`email`】, 【101†`number`】, 【102†`password`】, 【103†`search`】, 【104†`tel`】, 【105†`text`】, and 【106†`url`】 types.
L231: * If no minimum width is set on the control, it will only be as wide as the text cursor.
L232: * Controls with 【107†`placeholder`】 attributes will be rendered large enough to display the placeholder text.
L233: * The 【108†`size`】 attribute modifies the default preferred size of such `<input>` elements. As a result, `size` has no effect on `<input>` elements with `field-sizing: content` set.
L234: * 【109†`file`】 inputs. Direct text input is not possible; however, the displayed filename changes as the user selects a new file to upload. When `field-sizing: content` is set, the control will change size to shrinkwrap the filename.
L235: * 【89†`<textarea>`】 controls. It is worth noting that `<textarea>` elements with `field-sizing: content` set behave much like single-line text controls, with the following additions:
L236: * If `<textarea>` elements are unable to grow due to a width constraint, they will start to grow in height to display additional rows of content. When a height constraint is then reached, they will then start to show a scrollbar to allow all the content to be viewed.
L237: * 【110†`rows`】 and 【111†`cols`】 attributes modify the default preferred size of a `<textarea>`. As a result, `rows`/`cols` have no effect on `<textarea>` elements with `field-sizing: content` set.
L238: * 【112†`<select>`】 controls. These behave a bit differently to what you might expect with `field-sizing: content` set. The effect depends on the type of `<select>` control you are creating:
L239: * Regular drop-down boxes will change their width to always fit the displayed option value as new values are selected. (By default, the drop-down's size is set to be large enough to display the longest option value.)
L240: * List boxes (`<select>` elements with the 【113†`multiple`】 or 【114†`size`】 attribute) will be large enough to display all the options without needing to scroll. (By default, the drop-down box will require scrolling to view all the option values.)
L241: * The 【114†`size`】 attribute has very little effect on `<select>` elements that have `field-sizing: content` set. In such cases, the browser checks if the `size` is equal to `1` to determine whether the `<select>` control should appear as a drop-down or a listbox. However, it will always display all the options of a listbox, even if `size` is smaller than the number of options.
L242: ### 【115†`field-sizing` interaction with other size settings】
L243: The sizing flexibility provided to form controls by `field-sizing: content` can be overridden if you use other CSS sizing properties. Avoid setting a fixed 【116†`width`】 and 【117†`height`】 when using `field-sizing: content` because they will reimpose a fixed size on the control.
L244: However, using properties like 【118†`min-width`】 and 【119†`max-width`】 alongside `field-sizing: content` is quite effective because they allow the control to grow and shrink with the entered text and also prevent the control from becoming too large or too small.
L245: The 【120†`maxlength`】 attribute causes the control to stop growing in size when the maximum character limit is reached.
L246: ## 【92†Formal definition】
L247:
L248: 【121†Initial value】 | `fixed`
L249: Applies to | Elements with default preferred size
L250: 【122†Inherited】 | no
L251: 【123†Computed value】 | as specified
L252: 【124†Animation type】 | discrete
L253:
L254: ## 【93†Formal syntax】
L255:
L256: field-sizing =
L257: fixed 【125†|】
L258: content
L259:
L260: This syntax reflects the latest standard as per 【126†CSS Form Control Styling Level 1†drafts.csswg.org】. Not all browsers may have implemented every part. See 【86†Browser compatibility】 for support information.
L261: ## 【94†Examples】
L262:
L263: ### 【127†Growing and shrinking text fields】
L264:
L265: This example illustrates the effect of `field-sizing: content` on single- and multi-line text fields. The fields adjust their size as text is added or removed, effectively shrinkwrapping the contents, until a lower or upper size limit is reached.
L266: #### HTML
L267:
L268: The HTML in this example contains four form fields, each with an associated 【128†`<label>`】: three `<input>` elements of types 【105†`text`】, 【100†`email`】, and 【104†`tel`】, and a 【89†`<textarea>`】 element.
L269: html
L270:
L271: `<div>
L272: <label for="name">Enter name:</label>
L273: <input type="text" id="name" />
L274: </div>
L275: <div>
L276: <label for="email">Enter email:</label>
L277: <input type="email" id="email" placeholder="e.g. a@b.com" />
L278: </div>
L279: <div>
L280: <label for="tel">Enter telephone:</label>
L281: <input type="tel" id="tel" maxlength="15" />
L282: </div>
L283: <div>
L284: <label for="comment">Enter comment:</label>
L285: <textarea id="comment">This is a comment.</textarea>
L286: </div>
L287: `
L289: * The first two fields have no length restrictions set.
L290: * The third field (of type `tel`) has a 【120†`maxlength`】 attribute set, which stops the size of the field from increasing when the character limit is reached.
L291: * The `<textarea>` will grow in the inline direction until the edge of the 【118†`min-width`】 constraint (set in the CSS code below) is reached, then start to add new lines in the block direction to contain subsequent characters.
L292: * The `email` input has a placeholder set. This causes the field to render big enough to show the entire placeholder. Once the field is focused and the user starts typing, the field changes size to the `min-width` value. The `text` field, which doesn't have a placeholder, renders initially at `min-width`.
L293: #### CSS
L294:
L295: In the CSS, we set `field-sizing: content` on the three form fields, along with a 【118†`min-width`】 and 【119†`max-width`】 to constrain the input size. It is worth reiterating that, if no minimum width was set on the fields, they would be rendered only as wide as the text cursor.
L296: We also give the `<label>`s some rudimentary styling so that they sit neatly next to the fields.
L297:
L298: `body {
L299: box-sizing: border-box;
L300: padding: 20px;
L301: }
L302:
L303: div {
L304: margin-bottom: 20px;
L305: display: flex;
L306: }
L307: `
L308:
L309: css
L310:
L311: `input,
L312: textarea {
L313: field-sizing: content;
L314: min-width: 50px;
L315: max-width: 350px;
L316: }
L317:
L318: label {
L319: width: 150px;
L320: margin-right: 20px;
L321: text-align: right;
L322: }
L323: `
L324: #### Result
L325:
L326: Try entering and removing text in the fields below to explore the effects of `field-sizing: content` alongside other sizing properties.
L327:
L328: ### 【129†Controlling `<select>` element display】
L329:
L330: This example illustrates the effect of `field-sizing: content` on 【112†`<select>`】 elements, both drop-down menu types and multiline listbox types.
L331: #### HTML
L332:
L333: The HTML contains two sets of `<select>` elements: one with `field-sizing: content` applied, and one without, allowing you to see the difference (though the effect may be less obvious than on text fields). Each set includes one drop-down menu type and one multiline listbox type (with the 【113†`multiple`】 attribute set).
L334: html
L335:
L336: `<div class="field-sizing">

<title>WebKit Features for Safari 26.2 | WebKit</title>
<location>https://webkit.org/blog/17640/webkit-features-for-safari-26-2/</location>

L65: To go with the intended original behavior in HTML5, the default UA styling for `h1` elements was 【33†specified†html.spec.whatwg.org】 to visually change the headline when it was a child of `article`, `aside`, `nav`, or `section` — making the `font-size` and `margin` smaller and smaller each time it was nested. In Safari 26.2, following a recent HTML standard change, those 【34†UA styles are being removed†developer.mozilla.org】.
L66: When viewing web content in a 【35†Mac Catalyst†developer.apple.com】 app on macOS 26.2, elements with a `title` attribute will now display the tooltip when a user hovers.
L67: ## CSS
L68:
L69: ### Shrink wrapping form fields
L70:
L71: Safari 26.2 adds support for the `field-sizing` property. Applying `field-sizing: content` causes the `input` and `textarea` form fields to shrink-wrap their content and grow as more text is entered. This eliminates the need for JavaScript to resize form fields dynamically. You can use `min-height`, `min-width`, `max-height`, and `max-width` to keep the field within the range you desire.
L72: ### CSS Calc functions
L73:
L74: In recent years, CSS has gained many powerful mathematical abilities, adding to its maturity as a programming language. Safari 26.2 brings three new functions — `random()`, `sibling-index()` and `sibling-count()`.
L75: The `random()` function lets you include a randomly generated value from a specified range in your calculations. For example, `random(0, 100, 2)` will choose an even number between 0 and 100, while `random(0turn, 1turn)` will be a fraction of a turn — basically, any decimal between 0 and 360 degrees. Learn all about what the CSS random function can do in our article, 【36†Rolling the dice with CSS random()】.
L89: Safari 26.2 adds support for text shaping across inline boxes. This is especially impactful for scripts like Arabic, N’Ko and many others where the letters join together and change appearance as text is rendered. The word “مرحبا” in Arabic (which means “hello” or “welcome”) is spelled using these letters: م ر ح ب ا — which then change their shapes and work together to create مرحبا. Before Safari 26.2, such letters would not combine if they were wrapped in separate elements.
L240: ## JavaScript
L241:
L242: Safari 26.2 adds support for `Math.sumPrecise()`, which sums multiple numbers with better floating-point accuracy. Regular addition accumulates rounding errors with each operation — adding 12 numbers means 11 separate additions, each losing a bit of precision. `Math.sumPrecise()` performs the entire sum as a single operation, eliminating accumulated error.
L243: Safari 26.2 adds support for `Map.prototype.getOrInsert()` and `WeakMap.prototype.getOrInsert()`, letting you retrieve a value or insert a default if the key doesn’t exist — all in one operation. This simplifies the common check-then-set pattern, making code that builds up data structures cleaner and more efficiently.
L244: ## WebAssembly
L245:
L246: WebKit for Safari 26.2 adds support for Wasm Memory resizable buffer APIs. They give you more control over how WebAssembly memory is allocated and managed, allowing code in both Wasm and JavaScript to directly access the same memory space for efficient communication.
L252: Support for 【51†WebXR first shipped in Safari 18.0】 in visionOS 2 in September 2024. It relied on WebGL for rendering 3D graphics. In September 2025, 【52†Safari 26.0 added support for WebGPU】 for use cases outside of WebXR. WebGPU is similar to WebGL in its capabilities, but it’s designed to better match how modern GPUs work, resulting in better performance and more flexibility. Now with Safari 26.2 on visionOS, WebXR supports WebGPU.
L328: * Fixed inheritance of additional animation properties (`animation-timing-function`, `animation-play-state`, `animation-iteration-count`, and `animation-direction`) in `::view-transition` pseudo-elements to improve style consistency. (156131284)
L329: * Fixed `animation-name` resolution to correctly find matching `@keyframes` within tree-scoped and shadow DOM contexts. (156484228)
L330: * Fixed a bug where extremely large `animation-duration` values could cause the page to become unresponsive. (158775366)
L331: * Fixed `Animation.commitStyles()` so that custom properties are properly committed to the target element. (158919736)
L332: * Fixed `Animation.commitStyles()` to correctly commit logical properties as their corresponding physical properties. (158920529)
L333: ### Browser
L334:
L335: * Fixed: Safari now reports a frozen OS version in its user agent string on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, showing the last version released before iOS 26. (156170132)
L336: ### CSS
L337: * Fixed `-webkit-user-select: none` disabling find-in-page in Safari. (8081660)
L338: * Fixed incorrect z-ordering for `position: sticky` elements. (90572595)
L339: * Fixed `getComputedStyle` to correctly ignore `::first-letter` and `::first-line` styles on flex containers, to reflect used style. (94163778)
L340: * Fixed style invalidation so that `:scope` selectors always match even when the scoping root is unavailable. (135907710)
L341: * Fixed propagation of the `body` element’s `writing-mode` to the document element to match the CSS Writing Modes Level 4 specification. (149475070)
L342: * Fixed `@position-try` so that `revert-layer` correctly only reverts the position-try origin instead of affecting other cascade origins. (154355428)
L343: * Fixed positioned boxes in scrollable containing blocks to overflow in scrollable direction. (155625030)
L344: * Fixed `anchor-center` so that when an anchored element has no anchor in the same containing block, it correctly falls back to behaving like `center` as specified. (155768216)
L345: * Fixed `anchor()` positioning in CSS Grid to correctly account for `grid-area`. (155823420)
L346: * Fixed the default computed value for `text-emphasis-style: filled|open` to be `filled|open circle` not `filled|open dot` in horizontal typographic modes. (155911820)

L348: * Fixed an issue where `@namespace` rules that failed insertion could still affect the namespace node. (156651404)
L349: * Fixed incorrect handling of `auto` inline margins on grid items during track sizing that caused excessive vertical spacing in subgrids. (157638931)
L350: * Fixed automatic `min-size` handling for flex and grid items to correctly treat `overflow: clip` as non-scrollable, aligning with the CSS specifications. (158215991)
L351: * Fixed incorrect baseline alignment for `<button>` elements when `contain: layout` is applied by using the content box as the baseline. (159007878)
L352: * Fixed out-of-flow box with no sibling ignoring align-content. (159097576)
L353: * Fixed CSS anchor positioning to remember the last successful position option at `ResizeObserver` delivery time, aligning with the spec. (159225250)
L354: * Fixed handling of the `::first-line` pseudo-element when floats prevent the initial line from containing inline content, ensuring correct styling is applied to the actual first formatted line. (159613287)
L355: * Fixed an issue where collapsed table rows subtracted `border-spacing` twice. (160542118)
L356: * Fixed `::view-transition` pseudo-element to use `position: absolute` instead of `fixed` to align with the updated specification. (160622000)
L357: * Fixed container queries to allow `container-name` matching across the full flat tree, making container names tree-scoped in line with the CSS Conditional 5 specification. (160696378)
L358: * Fixed handling of `::first-letter` pseudo-elements to always force `inline` display unless floated.(160710650)

<title>WebKit Features for Safari 26.2 | WebKit</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Published: 10 months ago; Crawled: today; Safari 26.2 adds support for the `field-sizing` property. Applying `field-sizing: content` causes the `input` and `textarea` form fields to shrink-wrap their content and grow as more text is entered. ... * Fixed: Safari now reports a frozen OS version in its user agent string on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, showing the last version released before iOS 26. ... * Fixed `-webkit-user-select: none` disabling find-in-page in Safari. ... * Fixed automatic `min-size` handling for flex and grid items to correctly treat `overflow: clip` as non-scrollable, aligning with the CSS specifications.
## CSS
### Shrink wrapping form fields
Safari 26.2 adds support for the `field-sizing` property.
### CSS Calc functions
In recent years, CSS has gained many powerful mathematical abilities, adding to its maturity as a programming language. Safari 26.2 brings three new functions — `random()`, `sibling-index()` and `sibling-count()`.
The `random()` function lets you include a randomly generated value from a specified range in your calculations. For example, `random(0, 100, 2)` will choose an even number between 0 and 100, while `random(0turn, 1turn)` will be a fraction of a turn — basically, any decimal between 0 and 360 degrees. Learn all about what the CSS random function can do in our article, Rolling the dice with CSS random().

Add an autosizing fallback for the form name.
The form builder renders this DraftTextarea with rows={1}. Its only growth mechanism is field-sizing-content. iOS WebKit versions supported by the app before 26.2 ignore that property, so long names wrap inside a one-row textarea and remain clipped or require internal scrolling.
Add a JavaScript autosizing fallback for this field.

Add a JavaScript autosizing fallback to the form-name DraftTextarea in the
builder chrome so long names expand on iOS WebKit versions that ignore
field-sizing-content. Preserve the existing single-line input behavior and
styling.

Strip pasted line breaks in singleLine drafts.
A multiline paste remains multiline because raw.trim() removes only outer whitespace. The blur path then sends that value through renameForm, so a form name can be submitted and cached with embedded newlines.

Reserve the full mobile top inset in the respond view.
This full-frame scroller pads its top with --safe-top. The repository mobile rule requires --mobile-content-inset-top with touch: on every full-frame view. That token covers the safe area and any floating header. --safe-top covers only the safe area, so the first response or preview controls can sit under a floating header.
The sibling form views use the same token with the same bottom inset.

Translate the mobile Add menu labels.
MobileCreateMenu displays these action labels and the label="Add" trigger directly. They remain in English when the interface language changes. Use t() for Section, Gate, both meeting-link labels, and Add; add their English messages to the locale. As per coding guidelines, “Render user-visible text in new UI, and every menu and navigation label, with t().”

Why
The form builder, preview and respond views were unusable at phone width (MACRO-01a1615b-5a04-7c13-8c91-4f99abfdefa4):
What
form-block.tsx: on touch devices the tabs render in the page (InlineFormHeader) instead of the floating header; desktop is unchanged.builder-view.tsx: on touch, the add actions float above the dock throughFloatRegion(accessory) as an Add menu built on the sharedMobileCreateMenu, replacing New while Build is active and hiding with the keyboard. Desktop keeps the inline row; its buttons now wrap instead of clipping.MobileCreateMenu.tsx: optional triggerlabel(defaults to New).builder-chrome.tsx/draft-input.tsx: the form name is aDraftTextareain a newsingleLinemode (trimmed, never empty, Enter commits), so it wraps.Button.tsx: the tooltip wrapper getsmax-w-full, so a button's ownmax-w-fulltruncates its label (this is what pushed the database pill off-screen).form-respond-page.tsx: the scroller reserves--safe-topand--mobile-content-inset-bottomon touch.docs/agent-guide/forms.md: touch tabs and the Add menu.Decisions:
