Why

A context summary that finishes while a tool is running (the in-memory agent starts one in the background at 60% of the window) was folded into a separate message with the next turn id. The transcript sorts by turn, so the "Context compacted" divider ended up below the whole turn: under the call that was still running, and under every step the agent took after the summary. The page and a reload showed the same wrong order, because both use the same fold.

What

  • agent_fold: when a turn is open, the compaction now becomes a part of that turn's agent message, placed after whatever the agent had produced when the summary landed. If the agent hasn't produced anything yet (a summary the turn waited for), the compaction starts the reply. A compaction between turns is still a message of its own.
  • The web transcript already splits a tool group at any non-tool part, so the running group now splits around the divider. The frontend didn't need to change. I added a segmentParts test to pin that split.
  • Tests: the incremental machine (live) and the batch fold (reload) both put the divider between the interrupted call and the next one, and give identical output. The existing compaction test asserted the old order, so I updated it.
  • Updated the agent guide (docs/agent-guide/ai-chat.md) to say where the divider appears.

Decisions

  • Split the group rather than hold the divider until the tool settles. The summary really did land while the call was running, so the divider goes after the call that had started and before the next step. Holding it back would need extra fold state and would place it somewhere it didn't happen.
  • A compaction inside a turn still uses up a turn id. Comms placeholder rows store (turn, author) message ids, so every later turn keeps the id it had before this change. The only folded message that goes away is the old standalone compaction message for a mid-turn summary. Nothing addresses that message.
  • No wire or type changes. MessagePart::Control already exists inside agent messages, so export_types has nothing to regenerate.

…eply

A context summary that finished while a tool ran became its own message
with the next turn id, so the transcript sorted it below the whole turn:
under the running call and every step that came after it. A compaction
inside an open turn is now a part of that turn's agent message, after
what the agent had produced when it landed, so the tool group splits
around it. It still consumes a turn id so later turns keep theirs.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Context compaction now appears in the agent reply where it occurs, including when it arrives during a running tool call. Later reply content and tool activity are shown separately.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how context compaction is displayed in agent sessions.

The fold now records compaction as an accepted control part in the active turn’s agent reply, creating an agent message if needed. Without an active turn, it creates a standalone agent message. Tests cover compaction before and during agent output, turn IDs, and compaction received during a running tool call. A web test checks that compaction separates tool groups. The agent-session documentation describes the compaction line’s position.

Compaction can appear before earlier thought or leave a system-turn reply without a completion marker. The issue is limited to that path.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Append in-turn compaction through the agent-part path.

When a system turn receives compaction, this branch bypasses the buffer handling in push_agent_part. Buffered thought can appear after the divider. If the turn then emits <noop/>, close_turn suppresses the closing update but leaves the new compaction message with stop: None. Flush the buffers and mark the turn as having produced a part before appending compaction. Keep the between-turn case standalone. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
