Why

Header presence avatars (BlockLiveIndicators) often leave out people who are actively viewing or editing the same document. I traced the pipeline (useEntitySubscription → gateway track_entity open/ping/close → user_tracking_change → liveIndicators store → header avatars) against a week of the presence telemetry from #7231:

  • Heartbeat gated on window focus. 11,352 presence.heartbeat_lapsed events: 7,713 from hidden tabs (expected), 3,636 from tabs that were visible but unfocused (almost all web, desktop Chrome on macOS), and 3 from focused tabs. Someone reading a doc beside the window they're typing in, or on a second monitor, stops pinging. The gateway drops them after 60 s.
  • Clock-skew wrap in the gateway. is_active_in_threshold computed now - last_ping as an unchecked u64. Instances stamp last_ping with their own clocks, so a fresh ping read on an instance whose clock lags wraps to a huge age in release builds, and the viewer is filtered out of the list.
  • A ping can't recover a lost open. A ping for a row that is gone fails its attribute_exists condition silently (.ok()). The viewer then stays invisible until they reopen the entity. That happens if the open's write failed (its error is also swallowed) or the row was cleared under a live connection.
  • Eventually consistent read. The list sent right after an open or close came from an eventually consistent DynamoDB query, which could miss the write that triggered it.

Checked and ruled out:

  • Store reactivity (fix: restore reactivity in live indicator store access #7784). unwrap(indicatorStore[id]) reads the tracked property before unwrapping, and setting an array replaces the value instead of merging into it. The avatars do re-render; the new store test covers it.
  • "Close on another tab removing the user". Rows are keyed by (entity, connection_id) and each tab has its own socket. Splits within a tab share one ref-counted subscription.
  • Split reuse missing an open. The memoized target closes and reopens on entity change.
  • Reconnects. useReopenTrackedEntitiesOnReconnect replays opens before the socket buffer flushes.

MACRO-01a16fd9-7c26-7e26-8a9e-de077a9fa528

What

  • apps/web/.../service-connection/client.ts, core/signal/tabFocus.ts: the entity heartbeat and the catch-up ping now follow page visibility (isTabVisible), not window focus. Decision: a document on screen counts as "looking at it", even when focus is in another window. Hidden tabs still lapse after 60 s as before.
  • connection_gateway model/connection.rs: the activity check uses saturating_sub through a pure is_active_at(now), so a ping stamped slightly in the future counts as fresh.
  • connection_gateway service/connection.rs, service/dynamodb.rs: update_last_entity_ping returns None for a missing row, and refresh_connection_entity writes the row back with a warn!, so presence heals on the next 20 s heartbeat. get_entries_by_entity uses consistent_read(true).
  • Tests: heartbeat in a visible, unfocused tab (fails on the old focus gate), store re-render per entity, clock-skew/expiry/never-pinged activity, and a ping re-creating a missing row.
  • services/connection_gateway/AGENTS.md: documents the presence rules.

Follow-ups

  • A socket disconnect removes the connection's rows but sends no user_tracking_change. Other viewers keep a departed user's dot until the next heartbeat (≤ 20 s). That's a stale dot rather than a missing one, so it's left out here.
  • The useRefreshTrackedEntitiesOnFocus name now means "on visible"; I kept the name to keep this diff small.
  • The reported cases came in as Macro tasks; I couldn't read them (the Macro MCP needed auth), so this works from the task spec and the telemetry.

Why: the entity heartbeat paused whenever the window lost focus, so a
viewer reading a document beside the window they were typing in (a second
monitor, a call) dropped out of everyone's header avatars after 60s. About a
third of heartbeat lapses in presence telemetry came from visible, unfocused
tabs.

What: gate the heartbeat and the catch-up ping on page visibility instead of
window focus.
Why: header avatars must re-render on every user_tracking_change for their
entity; a store read that stops tracking would leave stale dots.

What: add a store test that renders an entity's indicators through a series
of tracking changes, including one for another entity.
Why: an entity row's age was computed with an unchecked u64 subtraction.
Gateway instances stamp last_ping with their own clocks, so a fresh ping read
on an instance whose clock lags wraps to a huge age in release builds and the
viewer is left out of user_tracking_change.

What: compute the age with saturating_sub through a pure is_active_at(now)
and test the skew, expiry, and never-pinged cases.
Why: a ping for an entity row that no longer existed failed its condition
silently, so a viewer whose open was lost (a swallowed write error, a row
cleared under a live connection) stayed invisible until they reopened the
entity. The entity list read right after an open or close was also
eventually consistent and could miss that write.

What: update_last_entity_ping returns None for a missing row and
refresh_connection_entity writes the row back; get_entries_by_entity reads
consistently. Document the presence rules in AGENTS.md.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Presence tracking now continues while a browser tab is visible, even if it isn’t focused. Heartbeats pause when the tab is hidden and resume when it becomes visible again.
    • Returning to a tab after an extended absence refreshes its tracked views.
    • Missing presence records are restored during the next heartbeat, helping keep connection status accurate.

The web client now uses document visibility, rather than window focus, to control connection heartbeats and refreshes. The connection gateway changes entity activity calculations and recreates a missing entity entry when a ping refreshes a connection. The pull request also adds a test for document-specific live indicator updates.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 56981

The change keeps header avatars visible for unfocused tabs and recovers lost presence rows. As written, the gateway's refresh span would record the raw user ID, which can be an email address, in telemetry. Skip that argument and log an opaque identifier before merging.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Do not recreate presence after an entity Close.

If a WebSocket sends Close and then a delayed Ping for the same entity, Close removes the row and unsubscribes the connection. The Ping sees None, recreates the row, and publishes presence for a viewer who is no longer subscribed. Distinguish a lost Open from an entity that this connection explicitly closed before restoring its row.

Keep user_id out of the refresh span.

#[tracing::instrument(err, skip(self))] now records the full UserEntityConnection argument. That argument contains user_id, which can contain an email address. Skip connection_entity and record only safe, opaque IDs explicitly. As per coding guidelines, telemetry must “never record … personal data (email, username, IP); use opaque ids.”

Time and record the missing-row recovery.

The existing refresh span covers the failed update, recovery insert, and user update as one operation. Its warning marks the recovery attempt, but the trace does not identify how long the insert took or record that recovery succeeded. Add a named child span around the recovery write and record its outcome. As per coding guidelines, “Separate the phases a reader would ask about” and “Record outcome on the span.”

…epo stub

Why: ConnectionRepo::update_last_entity_ping now returns None for a missing
row, and the harness test stub still had the old signature.

What: update the stub's return type.
