Why

Sending a reply or forward inserts the signature above the quoted thread. This holds for Gmail and Outlook and for immediate, scheduled and outbox sends. The desktop reply composer showed the signature preview below the quote controls and attachments, so users saw a different layout from the one their recipients get. The mobile composer already placed it above the quote controls.

Depends on #8792, #8798, #8799, #8802, #8803 and #8804. This branch includes their commits until they merge.

How it works

Sent message Desktop reply, before Desktop reply, after
message message message
signature quote control signature
quoted thread attachments quote control
                  signature attachments
                  send bar send bar

SignaturePreparation::apply inserts the signature before the first .macro_quote on every send path. Gmail sends that HTML as MIME, and Outlook sends it as createReply's message.body. The preview now follows the same order.

What

  • reply-input.tsx renders the desktop preview right below the editor and above the quoted-text controls. It stays outside the scroll area, so it remains in view above the controls as a reply grows. Mobile keeps its place inside the scroll area. Both layouts share one SignatureRow.
  • reply-signature-order.test.tsx mounts the real reply view and signature preview. It checks the order a reader meets the message, the signature and the quote control, for replies and forwards, on Gmail and Outlook, desktop and mobile.
  • The email agent guide says where the Signature bar sits.

Review fix carried for #8802

CodeRabbit's comment is on #8802's send watcher. It is fixed here, so nothing re-merges down the stack.

Every tab removes a send from the outbox once it is delivered, or once a cancel restores it. A composing tab that read the outbox late found nothing and stopped without reporting anything. Undo stayed on offer for a send that was already delivered. "Email sent" never appeared, and a reply cancelled in another tab left its thread marked done.

  • send-progress.ts: when a send it was following is gone, the watcher asks the server how it ended, as cancelEmailSendAndConfirm already does. A delivered send reports sent. A cancelled send, or one the server never received, reports cancelled. If the server can't be reached, a new untracked state only withdraws Undo.
  • The status read is traced and recorded like the watcher's other outcomes.
  • Gmail and Outlook tests use the real outbox journal and dispatcher, and mock only the server. Another tab delivers and removes the send first, with the server answering and with the server unreachable. All four cases timed out before the fix.
  • Declined: CodeRabbit also suggested calling onUndelivered whenever sent wasn't seen. That would return a delivered reply's thread to Inbox.
  • The fix assumes only a cancel removes a send that wasn't delivered. If something else ever removes sends, a live send would be reported as cancelled.

Follow-ups

  • Showing the quoted text in the editor still puts the quote above the preview. The quote is editor content and the preview is not. Matching the sent order there needs the signature inside the editor, which is the editable signature work.
  • The thread view still strips a message's own signature, including mail sent from Macro, whose body_macro never holds one. Showing it needs a product call on trimming, and the same change in feat(email): prepare email bodies on the server #7950's Rust port of parseEmailContent.

…draft

Why: switching From moves the draft to a new server id, but the composer
keeps the old working copy's revision. The next local write then targets
the new id with that stale revision, so IndexedDB rejects it with "This
draft changed while saving" and the server autosave behind it never runs.

What: a behavior test over real IndexedDB working copies for both the
standalone and reply composers, Outlook to Gmail and Gmail to Outlook. It
fails today and should pass once the transfer resets local identity.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: switching From on a saved draft moves it to a new server draft and
thread. The composer adopted the new id but kept the old working copy's
revision, so the next local write was rejected with "This draft changed
while saving" and the save carrying the new sender never ran. A thread
route kept pointing at the deleted source thread, which showed the 404
page, and the source's working copy stayed behind.

What:
- Once the server commits the move, the transfer resets the local
revision fence and forgets the source working copy, for both composers.
- The standalone composer captures its post-move save before the host
shows the moved draft, so the new sender still saves if that unmounts
  the composer.
- The thread host replaces the route with the moved draft's thread.
  Replies stay on their conversation.
- The identity test now checks the post-move write itself; edits made
while the switch is still running are ignored by design.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: after a committed From switch, the transfer awaited the cache
refresh that evicts the source thread before returning. A thread route
still showing that thread swapped in the not-found page, and unmounted
the composer, before the caller could show the moved draft.

What: the post-commit cache refresh runs in the background and still
reports failures to telemetry, so the caller adopts and shows the moved
draft first.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: the fake returned nothing, which the feedback capability's type rejects, so the web type check failed.

What: the fake takes the notice options type and returns undefined.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: the compose route kept its draft only in in-memory params, so
reloading a new compose opened a blank composer with the primary inbox
as From, even though the content had autosaved. A From switch inside
the compose route had the same gap for the moved draft's new id.

What:
- The standalone composer reports its server-confirmed draft id to the
host. A handle the server has not confirmed would not resolve after a
reload, so the last confirmed id stays until a newer one is confirmed.
- The compose route records that id in an `email-compose` search param,
replacing the current history entry so the composer does not remount,
and reopens it ahead of the route's original params.
- The compose route host keeps a moved draft in place instead of
  following it to its thread.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: the guides said the compose route only reads its in-memory
`draftID` param and did not say where a moved draft is shown.

What: the architecture guide covers the `email-compose.draft` pane
search and which host follows a moved draft. The agent guide says what
to check after a From switch and a compose reload.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The capability table in the email architecture doc still described
EmailComposeHost and EmailDraftStorage without the moved-draft
destination, the route's draft, and the working-copy drop.

What: Name those capabilities in the two table rows.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The comment on the deferred cache refresh joined two sentences with
a colon.

What: Split it into two sentences.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…nd forward

Why: A reply sent after Forward on the same message shipped the
forwarded-message block. A saved forward reopened from the thread or
restored from its local copy came back as a reply, so Reply kept the
forward and Forward cleared its recipients.

What: Behavior tests for Gmail and Outlook inboxes that send through
the reply composer after Forward then Reply, after showing the quote
then Forward, and after reopening or restoring a saved forward. Paired
tests keep a plain forward and an undone forward sending their
forwarded message. The shared reply harness now connects its editor and
registers the quote command, as the view does.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: No draft field records whether a draft is a forward, and the reply
composer always seeded reply or reply all. A forward reopened from the
thread, restored from its local copy, or brought back by Undo said
"Replying to", and Forward then cleared its recipients.

What: Read the kind from the forwarded-message header outside any
blockquote, so a reply quoting a forwarded message stays a reply. The
composer takes the kind from the body its editor loads, a restored
draft, or an undo snapshot, keeping reply versus reply all otherwise.
A test keeps a reopened reply that quotes a forwarded message a reply.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…orward

Why: Changing between Reply and Forward only rewrote the envelope. The
forwarded message stayed in the editor and was sent with the reply,
and a reply showing its quote kept that quote when it became a forward.

What: When the kind changes, the composer reads the appended thread's
header and removes it if it belongs to the other kind. A new reply
appends its quote again at send, and a forward appends the forwarded
message, collapsing it only when newly added. A body the editor loads
is left as it is.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: A collapsed forward showed only an unlabeled "⋯" button, so it
looked empty, and its placeholder still started with "Reply".

What: The collapsed button reads "Show forwarded message" or "Show
quoted text", the show and hide toggle gets the same accessible name,
and the placeholder starts with "Forward" on a forward.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…r inbox

Why: Changing the From inbox is how a user recovers a draft the
provider rejected. The From switch reuses the send gate, so blocking
delivery of rejected content would also block moving it.

What: A regression test for compose and reply drafts. A FAILED draft
with invalid content moves to another inbox, and a draft with an
unfinished move or a draft conflict stays in its inbox.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The compose and reply From switches reused the send gate. Once
provider-rejected content blocks delivery, that gate would also block
moving the draft, which is how the user recovers it.

What: operationBlocksInboxSwitch blocks edit-blocking states and
unfinished moves and allows a FAILED draft with invalid content. Both
From switches use it instead of the send gate.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…moves

Why: The agent guide did not say how a composer behaves when it switches
between Reply and Forward, how a reopened forward should look, or that a
draft the provider rejected can still change its sender inbox.

What: Add checks for switching one message's composer between Reply and
Forward, for forwards reopened from the thread, a local copy, or Undo, and
for the named collapsed-content control. Note which drafts can switch From.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: pressing Enter after typing a full address committed whichever
suggestion recency put first, so teo@macro.com became
teo+123456@macro.com. A contact whose name starts with the query sank
below recent substring matches, and the same-domain boost followed the
Macro login rather than the inbox the mail goes out from.

What: drive the real combobox for a Gmail and an Outlook sending inbox
and assert what Enter commits, where a name-prefix contact lands for
"gab", and which colleague opens first on ArrowDown.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…eloads

Why: Reloading a compose route whose draft save is still queued strips
the draft from the route, so a second reload opens a blank compose.

What: Add a route test for Gmail and Outlook inboxes that uses the real
split router and this device's draft store. It opens a draft, queues an
edit, reloads twice before the server confirms it, and expects the
draft and its From to reopen. The composer test helper can now seed a
draft's persistence and local copy.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: fuzzy search gives every hit the same score, so recency and length
decided the order and Enter committed the first suggestion even when
another one, or the typed text itself, was exactly the address. The
typed address was appended after every match. The same-domain boost
read the Macro login, so a sender on another domain saw the login's
colleagues first.

What: order search results by match strength (exact address, an
address that continues the query, every query word starting a word,
then the rest) with the search order inside each, and rank the typed
address with them. The same-domain boost now uses selfEmail, which the
composers set to the sending inbox; other callers keep the login.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: after Send refused a draft with no recipient, adding a recipient
left "Please select at least one recipient" on screen until the next
Send. The message and subject errors stayed the same way.

What: for a Gmail and an Outlook inbox, refuse Send for each missing
requirement, meet it, and assert the composer drops that error and
then sends.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
… is queued

Why: A compose route reopened with a draft whose save was still queued
recorded no draft on its first run, which stripped `email-compose.draft`
from the URL. A second reload before the server confirmed the save then
opened a blank compose.

What:
- The standalone composer starts from the draft it opened, which this
device can read while its save is queued, instead of from no draft.
A draft the composer creates or moves to is still recorded only once
  the server confirms it.
- The email architecture and agent guides say the reopened draft stays
  in the URL across reloads.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: Send stored the first failed check as a fixed error, and only the
next Send cleared it. Adding a recipient after "Please select at least
one recipient" left the error up. A missing message or subject behaved
the same; only the inbox error already checked live state.

What: list the send requirements with their errors and predicates.
Send refuses the first unmet requirement, and validationError reports
it only while its predicate still fails.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: Reply on a bounce, or on a thread a bounce joined, put the
mailer-daemon or MicrosoftExchange system address in To beside the
real participants.

What: press Reply (which asks for reply-all) on a Gmail and an Outlook
bounce and assert what Send delivers: the other participants without
the bounce sender, nothing when only I received it, and a noreply
sender kept as a normal one.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: reply recipients dropped only my own addresses, so Reply on a
bounce put mailer-daemon@ or the Outlook MicrosoftExchange<hex>@ system
mailbox in To, and a reply on a thread a bounce had joined carried it
along with the real participants. Those mailboxes read no replies.

What: drop mailer-daemon@, postmaster@ and MicrosoftExchange followed
by 32 hex characters wherever reply and reply-all build To and Cc.
Reply stays reply-all, and noreply@ senders stay, since they can be a
person's address.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: a recipient chip shows only the display name, so two people with
the same name looked identical and a screen reader never heard which
address the mail goes to. The hover card already shows the address.

What: put the address in a screen-reader-only span inside chips that
show a name. The visible chip is unchanged.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: the agent guide had no check for which suggestion Enter commits,
how send errors clear, or who Reply addresses on a bounce.

What: add the browser checks for exact-address and name-prefix
ranking, the sending-domain order, live send errors, and bounce
senders left out of replies.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: This branch depends on #8792, which now keeps a reopened draft on
its compose route while its save is still queued.

What: Merge origin/synoet/compose-draft-identity-7445 at e4b5a7a.
email-composer.ts and docs/agent-guide/email.md merged without
conflicts; both sides' changes are kept.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: the comment said these mailboxes read no replies, but postmaster@
is required to accept mail. What holds for all three is that a reply
there reaches no one on the thread.

What: reword the comment above the bounce sender pattern.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…45' into synoet/compose-recipients-acd3

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: a reply or forward marks its thread done as soon as the outbox
accepts it, so a send that later fails leaves the thread archived. The
send toast also says "Email sent" before delivery and expires after a
fixed 5 seconds, while the server's undo window runs from its own
acceptance and lasts longer.

What: composer tests for Gmail and Outlook inboxes that drive a queued
send through accepted, failed, cancelled and sent progress and check the
thread's completion, the last notice, and when the Undo offer ends.
An outbox test runs the real journal and dispatcher on fake IndexedDB
against a fake server and checks the progress a composer is told. These
fail until the fix lands.

cursoragent and others added 20 commits October 25, 2026 04:50
Why: Under load the To field's deferred mount focus runs after the user
has already clicked into the subject or message, and the rest of their
typing lands in To.

What: Mount the real compose view and drive it with user-event on Gmail
and Outlook inboxes. Type into the subject or message before the deferred
focus runs, then after, and expect every character in the field the user
chose. Also pin that a fresh compose still focuses To.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…focus

Why: RecipientSelector defers its focusOnMount focus by a task. On a busy
page that task runs after queued input, so a user who already clicked into
the subject or message has their next keystrokes moved into To.

What: Remember what held focus at mount, and skip the deferred focus when
focus has since moved into another text field. A panel or button taking
focus in the meantime still hands it to the input.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…s device

Why: A new draft typed offline is saved on the device, but its server
write waits in the queue and the composer shows nothing. The user has no
sign that the draft is not saved anywhere else.

What: Mount the compose view on real IndexedDB working copies with the
server write left unconfirmed. Type offline on Gmail and Outlook inboxes,
expect a notice that the draft is only on this device, and expect it to
clear once the server acknowledges the copy. Saving online stays silent.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The draft sync status reports only failures. Offline, a new draft is
saved on the device and its server write waits in the queue, so nothing
tells the user the draft has not reached their mailbox.

What: When the device looks offline and the working copy holds a revision
the server has not acknowledged, show "Saved on this device; waiting to
sync" as a status rather than an alert. It clears once the server
acknowledges the copy. Online saving stays silent. The compose and reply
views pass their connectivity in.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…read

Why: After Send, the thread view mounts its own compose context, and its
outbox observer starts empty and not ready. For that moment the thread holds
only the draft, so it renders the composer with "Loading draft…". A compose
opened from a list view starts locked the same way.

What: Mount one outbox observer, refresh it after a send is persisted, then
mount a second observer and expect it to start ready with that send.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: Each compose context read the local outbox on its own and stayed not
ready until that read finished. A not-ready outbox locks the composer, so a
compose opened from a list view started with Send and the fields disabled.
After Send, the thread view mounted cold, missed the queued send, and
rendered the draft as a composer with "Loading draft…".

What: Keep one outbox snapshot per document. The first mounted surface starts
the watcher, poll and reconnect listener, and the last one stops them; every
mount still rereads durable state. Sending refreshes the snapshot before it
hands off, so the thread opens with the send already shown as sent. The
snapshot clears when the outbox session changes account. The unused enabled
flag is gone.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: All inboxes mounts no outbox observer, so the first compose after
sign-in reads the outbox itself and stays locked until that read finishes.
Send and every field are disabled for that moment.

What: Start the outbox session, then mount a compose surface and expect the
outbox to already be ready.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The shared outbox snapshot was only read once a surface that observes it
mounted. All inboxes mounts none, so the first compose after sign-in still
started locked, with Send and the fields disabled until its own read
finished.

What: The outbox session now sets the queued-send session too, mirroring
server sends. Starting a session clears the snapshot and reads the new
account's outbox at once; signing out only clears it.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: Each compose context reads linked inboxes from the GraphQL cache, and
that read is async. Until it lands the From row disappears, then reappears
with the default inbox, shifting the composer.

What: Mount the real composer state with inboxes still loading and expect
the sender row to be present and busy, then to show the default inbox in
the same row once they load.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: A new composer reads linked inboxes from the async GraphQL cache. The
From row was hidden until that read landed, then appeared with the default
inbox and pushed the fields down.

What: The composer exposes whether inboxes are loading. The desktop From row
stays rendered and marked busy, with a placeholder where the inbox picker
will be, unless a draft already names its sender.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
… focus

Why: The guides said saving shows no text even offline, and did not cover
edits made while an emptied draft is deleted, typing into another field
before To takes focus, the From row while inboxes load, or the thread shown
right after Send.

What: The agent guide gives the expected behavior and a check for each. The
architecture guide records that every surface shares one outbox snapshot,
read at sign-in and refreshed by Send before the thread opens.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why: The comment joined its two clauses with a colon, which the repository's
prose style avoids.

What: Join them with "so" instead. No behavior change.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
… own functions

Why: The From loading state pushed ComposeLayout past the lint complexity
limit, and the offline status grew the sync status memo further past it.

What: The desktop sender row is its own component. The offline waiting
state is a helper the memo returns. Behavior is unchanged.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why
A From switch moves a draft to another inbox. The move saves the draft,
sends the transfer, may ask the server whether a lost transfer
committed, and refreshes both threads in the background. None of these
steps was traced, so a failed or slow move left nothing to search.

What
Wrap each move in an email.draft_transfer root span. It records the
draft, operation, and inbox ids, the destination provider, the
attachment count, whether the move is a retry, and the outcome. Aborted
and failed moves set error status. A rejected move records its reason
without error status.

Add save, request, recover, and refresh child spans. The transfer
request runs inside the root span's context, because zone.js drops the
active span across native awaits. Without that, the request would start
a separate trace.

Spans carry only ids, counts, and fixed error messages. They never
record addresses, subjects, bodies, or file names.

Declare the OpenTelemetry packages the new test imports. Document the
spans in the agent guide, with two gaps. email_service does not join
browser traces, and bearer-token auth starts its HTTP spans in a new
trace.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…end is sent

Why: When the server accepts a send with time left, the composer offers a
deadline-bound Undo without withdrawing the Undo it offered at queue time.
It loses that notice's id, so a host that keeps both notices would leave a
stale Undo after delivery.

What: A reply on Gmail and Outlook is accepted with ten seconds left, then
sent. Exactly one Undo is on offer after acceptance and none after delivery.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
…line one

Why: A send accepted with time left got a second Undo notice while the
first stayed open, and the composer lost the first notice's id. Delivery,
failure or cancellation then withdrew only the second.

What: Acceptance always withdraws the open Undo, then offers the
deadline-bound one when the user has not undone and time remains.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why
Sending a reply or forward puts the signature above the quoted thread
for Gmail and Outlook. The desktop composer previews it below the quote
controls and attachments. The preview shows a different message than
the one that goes out.

What
Mount the real reply composer view with the real signature preview. Assert
the order a reader meets the message, the signature and the quote control.
Cover replies and forwards, Gmail and Outlook, desktop and mobile. The
desktop cases fail until the preview moves.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why
Sending a reply or forward inserts the signature above the quoted thread.
This holds for Gmail and Outlook and for immediate, scheduled and outbox
sends. The desktop reply composer showed the signature after the quote
controls and attachments. Users saw a different layout than the one
their recipients get.

What
The desktop preview now sits right below the editor and above the
quoted-text controls. Mobile already placed it there. Both layouts share
one signature row.

Co-authored-by: teo <teo@macro.com>
Why
The agent guide tells verifiers how the reply and forward controls
read. It did not say where the signature preview belongs, so a preview
below the quote controls looked correct.

What
State that the Signature bar sits between the written message and the
quoted-text controls on desktop and mobile. Sending puts it there for
Gmail and Outlook.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Drafts can be reopened after navigation or reload, including drafts moved between inboxes.
    • Offline edits show when they’re saved on your device and waiting to sync.
    • Send notices reflect delivery progress and available undo time.
    • Reply and forward choices are better restored when reopening drafts.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Reply-all excludes recognized bounce addresses.
    • Recipient suggestions and compose focus behave more reliably.
    • Deleting a draft returns to the email list sooner, while preserving edits made during deletion.

The changes add shared queued-send progress tracking, compose-route draft identity, and updates to draft persistence and transfer. Composer behavior now covers send outcomes, reply and forward restoration, validation, and inbox switching. Compose and reply views add offline status and presentation updates. Recipient suggestions use revised ranking, and thread-operation polling stops on not-found responses.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 6fc9a

Reply signature ordering and the surrounding compose changes look safe to merge. One small edge case remains: if a queued send is delivered or restored from another tab before the notice sees it, the Undo offer can linger and a reply's thread may stay marked done. It is worth a follow-up fix but should not block the merge.

Comment thread apps/web/src/features/email-compose/queries/send-progress.ts Outdated

Why
Another tab can deliver a queued send and retire it from the outbox before
the composing tab reads it again. The composing tab then stops following
the send without reporting anything, so Undo stays on offer and Email sent
never appears.

What
- Cover a Gmail and an Outlook send that another tab delivers and retires
before this tab reads the outbox, with the server confirming delivery.
- Cover the same race when the server cannot be reached.

Why
Another tab can deliver a queued send, or restore it after a cancel, and
remove it from the outbox before the composing tab reads it again. The
watcher then stopped without a report. Undo stayed on offer and failed when
clicked, Email sent never appeared, and a cancelled reply left its thread
done.

What
- When the send is gone, the watcher asks the server how it ended, as
cancelEmailSendAndConfirm already does. A sent attempt reports sent. A
cancelled attempt, or none on the server, reports cancelled.
- When the server cannot say, the watcher reports the new untracked state
and the send notice withdraws Undo.
- A watcher its caller stopped reports nothing once the server answers.

Why
The send notice now reports a send that another tab delivered or cancelled
first, and the guides did not cover that case.

What
- The email architecture doc says the watcher asks the server how such a
send ended, and reports untracked when the server cannot say.
- The email agent guide says Email sent and the return to Inbox still hold
when another Mail tab finishes the send first.

Why
The send watcher now asks the server how a send ended when another tab
removed it from the outbox first. That read was untraced, and its outcome
was not recorded like the outcomes the watcher reads from the outbox.

What
- Trace the status read as email.send.status with the attempt and inbox IDs.
- Record the status the server returned as an observed send outcome.
