Why

Browsers have tabs; the desktop app only had splits. This adds browser-style tabs to the macOS desktop title bar (the Chromium/CEF app and the shipped WKWebView app share this frontend), where each tab holds a whole split layout. An inactive tab is plain data — it consumes nothing — but restores instantly against warm caches with its pane histories intact.

Tabs are not draggable: no strip reordering and no dragging a tab into the workspace (cut in review).

What

Router (lib/split-router): new layoutSnapshot / restoreLayout / layoutHref. A snapshot captures every pane with its back/forward history; restore is one guarded URL navigation that diffs against the open panes (panes already showing their entry stay mounted), resets each restored pane's history, and writes the URL once. Leave guards (unsaved changes) can refuse it.

Tab manager (components/app/tab-layout, per user):

  • Only the active tab is live. Switching captures the current layout and restores the target's.
  • Cmd+click on anything that navigates opens the destination in a background tab (cmd+shift+click switches to it). One router middleware consumes a one-shot "cmd was held on the last click" intent — no changes to navigation call sites, and cmd+click multi-select in lists is unaffected (it never navigates).
  • Tabs persist per user (zod-validated localStorage) and restore on launch.
  • Hotkeys: Cmd+T new tab, Shift+Cmd+W close tab, Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab cycle.

Strip UI: rendered by DesktopTitleBar in its center slot, which stays a window drag region. Tabs show live titles, a split-count badge when a tab holds more than one split, and close on X or middle click.

Gating: everything hangs off DesktopTabsController, mounted only on macOS desktop with the enable-desktop-tabs flag enabled (read reactively via useFeatureFlag). The manager, strip, hotkeys, cmd+click intent tracker, and persistence all live under it; the router middleware no-ops while the manager is unset. Per repo convention the flag defaults on in development mode (dev.macro.com and local dev); production defers to PostHog and is off until enabled there.

(The same captures are in the PR under docs/agent-guide/media/desktop-tabs/, linked from the navigation agent guide.)

Verified

  • Vitest: 11 new tests (5 router layout, 6 tab manager); full split-router + components/app suites green (41 files, 453 tests).
  • just check, biome, type-aware oxlint, and tsc pass.
  • Exercised in a real browser against the dev backend (desktop gates temporarily forced, reverted): live tab titles, + / new tab, switching restores layouts and in-tab history, ctrl+click → background tab, split badge, close, and persistence across reload. Ctrl+Tab cycling could not be exercised in the browser fixture (Chrome reserves it); it shares its path with the verified Cmd+T handler and needs a check in the real CEF app.
  • Not covered here: real macOS behaviors (window drag region over the strip, native double-click-to-zoom) need a CEF build on a Mac.

Follow-ups from review

  • Stale cmd+click intent fixed: sidebar list rows navigate on the press and ignore the click (list-nav.tsx), so the intent consumed on the press could be re-armed by the gesture's trailing click and hijack the next unrelated navigation. The tracker now deduplicates exactly the matching pointer gesture (a pointerdown's one trailing click); keyboard-generated clicks still arm. Regression-tested.
  • i18n: the strip's labels, aria-labels, split-count tooltip (pluralized), and hotkey descriptions render through t() with a new tabs locale namespace, per .agents/rules/web/i18n.md. A background tab opened by cmd+click stores no title until activated (the old placeholder derived English text from route ids); the strip shows the translated "New Tab" placeholder meanwhile.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added browser-style tabs to the macOS desktop app. Each tab retains its split layout and history, and tabs restore across sessions.
    • Create, close, switch, cycle, and reorder tabs with keyboard shortcuts. Drag tabs into split layouts to insert or replace panes.
    • Open links in a new background tab with a modifier-click.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on desktop tab behavior and controls.

Adds browser-style desktop tabs for macOS desktop builds. Each tab retains a split-layout snapshot or URL, and the active tab uses the live layout. The change adds layout snapshot and restore APIs, per-user tab persistence, navigation intent handling, hotkeys, and tab-strip drag-and-drop. A feature flag controls whether the tab controller mounts. Tests cover layout restoration and tab-manager behavior.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 02ca0

A relaunch on a different URL can replace a saved tab layout instead of restoring it. Resolve startup tab handling before merging, and add tracing for cancelled tab closes.

Defer tab persistence until startup tab resolution

createSplitRouter loads the current URL before createTabManager restores the persisted active tab. The persistence effect then writes that live URL and pane count over the saved active tab. A relaunch with a different startup URL therefore loses the saved layout URL and pane count.

The persisted schema does not contain pane histories, so this is not a loss of previously persisted history. Restore the saved tab before enabling this persistence effect, unless the startup URL is an explicit deep link. In that case, keep the deep link and update the tab state as an intentional navigation.

Add a span to closeActiveTab.

closeActiveTab runs a guarded, multi-step flow through router.restoreLayout or router.navigate. A cancelled result prevents the tab from closing. No enclosing span records this operation or its outcome. Add a tabs.close span with the tab count and committed or cancelled outcome.

Suggested fix

// guards (unsaved changes) decide whether the close happens.
       const shown = await show(target);
+      span.setAttr('tabs.outcome', shown ? 'committed' : 'cancelled');

Why: desktop tabs need to swap the entire pane layout atomically while
keeping every pane's back/forward history, which navigate(url) loses.

What: add layoutSnapshot/restoreLayout/layoutHref to the router. A
snapshot is plain data (pane ids, histories, cursors); restore runs as
one guarded URL navigation that diffs against the open panes, resets
each restored pane's history, and writes the URL once.
Why: browsers have tabs; the desktop app only had splits. Each tab
holds a whole split layout; an inactive tab is plain data but restores
instantly with its pane histories intact.

What: a per-user tab manager (components/app/tab-layout) gated to
macOS desktop behind enable-desktop-tabs (on under local dev HMR;
deployed environments defer to PostHog). Only the active tab is live;
switching captures the current layout and restores the target through
guarded router navigations. The title bar renders the strip in its
center slot: live titles, a split-count badge, close on X or middle
click, and a + button; tabs are not draggable. Cmd+click on anything
that navigates opens the destination in a background tab via a one-shot
intent consumed by router middleware; cmd+shift+click switches to it.
Tabs persist per user and restore on launch. Hotkeys: cmd+T,
shift+cmd+W, ctrl+tab / ctrl+shift+tab.
…e tab intent

Why: sidebar list rows navigate on the press and ignore the click
(list-nav.tsx), so the middleware consumed the intent on the press and
the gesture's trailing click re-armed it — a stale intent that would
turn the next unrelated navigation within 800ms into a tab.

What: track the press gesture explicitly: a pointerdown's one trailing
click cannot re-arm after that gesture's intent was consumed. Only the
matching pointer gesture is deduplicated; keyboard-generated clicks
have no pointerdown and still arm. Covered by a regression test.
Why: new UI renders through t() (.agents/rules/web/i18n.md); the strip,
its close and new-tab labels, the split-count tooltip, and the hotkey
descriptions were hard-coded English.

What: a tabs locale namespace with a plural split count; labels and
aria-labels render through t() at render time, hotkey descriptions
become functions, and the manager returns no title so the strip renders
the translated placeholder.
Why: titleForEntry derived a visible tab title from English route ids
and persisted it, bypassing t() (.agents/rules/web/i18n.md).

What: a tab opened by cmd+click stores no title until it is activated
and gets a live one; the strip renders its translated placeholder in
the meantime.
