I cast my nonexistent ballot for "い", which will read as a bold, uncompromising "EEEEEEE" in the user's mind and when said aloud (preferably out of earshot of coworkers).

"えええ" == "ehhhhh". We'd be automating away the work of a talk show studio audience...

I second that い or イ is more appropriate. Not only is it a better verbal fit, it also is a better semantic fit (if one were to say eeeeeeeeeee in English, then the situation that prompted it is one where a Japanese person is more likely to say いーーーー than えーーーー

I am sorry but this is very discriminating against languages that do not pronounce "e" as い.
French people would go for え or う.
The obvious answer here is that we need to geolocalize our client as to display the correct kana.

That's a fair point, but in the absence of such a system I would prefer to favor English because English starts with an E.

e.wav is basically い in terms of pronunciation. And if you are on an English-language system then the pronunciation of e.applescript is closer to い. So there's definitely precedence for pronuncuation as part of the repository.

We could take the perspective that the glyph e is the important part and not the sound, but then we have to consider the way that other languages pronounce that glyph, and in Japanese they pronounce it い. The only other alternative is transliteration of the sound(s) it represents (rather than transliteration of glyph name), and that's what most of the arguments have been about so far.
