The provider selector currently prints literal Color.CYAN / Color.RESET labels because str(Enum) formats the member name. Its box-drawing banner and success checkmarks also raise UnicodeEncodeError with strict CP1252 output, before a user can complete selection.

Use Python 3.11's native StrEnum for ANSI values and ASCII banner/status markers. Preserve SYSTEMROOT in the existing isolated workflow fixture so Windows can import the SDK dependencies. Provider/model selection and persistence behavior are unchanged.

Validation:

  • Regression tests were reproduced failing before the corresponding fixes. All 11 selector unit tests now pass on Windows and Linux, including a real subprocess with PYTHONIOENCODING=cp1252:strict.
  • Ruff passes for all three changed files; mypy passes for selector.py.
  • An offline public python -m llm run with the default catalog and strict CP1252 output completes selection and saves the configuration (36.78 seconds on this host).
  • The broader Windows selector/workflow/resolver/model-config matrix reports 135 passed, 1 skipped, and 10 subprocess timeouts at its existing 15-second limit. No timeout thresholds or skips were added. This is not a claim of a fully green local matrix.
  • The same broader matrix on local WSL reports 136 passed and 10 subprocess timeouts at the unchanged 15-second limit.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved compatibility with terminals that cannot display certain Unicode characters, helping interactive selection and saved settings work reliably in more environments.
  • User Interface
    • The banner now uses ASCII characters, and configuration-save and session-load confirmations display “OK” instead of a checkmark.

The selector now uses StrEnum for color values and ASCII characters for its banner and confirmations. Tests cover ANSI color formatting, banner output, interactive selection under strict cp1252 encoding, and preservation of SYSTEMROOT in a subprocess environment.

Changes: Selector terminal output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Terminal output and selection validation
src/llm/cli/selector.py, tests/test_selector.py, tests/test_selector_workflows.py
Color now subclasses StrEnum. The banner border and confirmation markers use ASCII characters. Tests check color formatting, banner output, interactive selection, saved configuration, and subprocess environment handling.

Use a stdout-configured logger for the changed messages.

The applicable Python guidance requires logging for print() calls in edited files and does not define a CLI exception. Preserve stdout behavior. Do not use default logging, which writes to stderr.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Low impact] Safe to merge based on the exercised selector and persistence behavior; no blocking issues were found.

Summary

Fixes selector colors and removes characters that fail with strict CP1252 output. StrEnum renders ANSI escape sequences instead of literal enum labels, and ASCII banner and status markers avoid encoding errors. The isolated workflow fixture also preserves SYSTEMROOT for Windows dependency imports.

All 31 selector and offline workflow tests passed. Default-catalog selection succeeded in all 12 combinations of three providers, two public CLI entry points, and UTF-8 or strict CP1252 output. Each saved configuration resolved correctly in a fresh process. Both session-persistence modes retained their expected behavior, and the isolated home configuration remained unchanged. The package’s Python >=3.11 requirement supports StrEnum.

No actionable issues found. The change is safe to merge based on the exercised behavior. Native Windows behavior was not independently verified on this Linux host.

  • The provider selector prints its colors and success messages in portable text.
  • Windows workflow tests keep SYSTEMROOT in child processes.
