Firstly, zef install Chart::Gnuplot itself works fine on my environment (Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Rakudo™ v2025.05.).
Please check that your Raku version isn’t too outdated.

Raku version in NixOS is Name: rakudo, Version: 2025.04 so perhaps one release short, if that should make a difference?

$ make
$ make install

Your gcc seems to meet the version requirement.

Your environment seems to lack the system's readline library, so gnuplot uses its own readline.c as a fallback.

If you can install a GNU readline library, the following configuration command would work:

./configure --prefix $HOME/.p6chart-gnuplot --with-latex --with-texdir=$HOME/.p6chart-gnuplot/share/texmf/tex/latex/gnuplot --with-readline=gnu

Alternatively, if you can't install it, --without-redline may work:

./configure --prefix $HOME/.p6chart-gnuplot --with-latex --with-texdir=$HOME/.p6chart-gnuplot/share/texmf/tex/latex/gnuplot --without-readline

The former command works and gnuplot-5 installs. However, zef install Chart::Gnuplot does still not work:

However, I guess that improving the CustomBuilder.pm6 module itself - maybe re-considering the hard-coded approach of installing gnuplot - even when it is already installed on the sytem - would benefit the module in general. And finaly maybe setting up a github action to validate, if the module can be installed on Linux/Mac/Windows and Nix, would help potential users of Chart::Gnuplot.
