Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of long paths when loading IGRF data on Windows, helping prevent path-length issues from interrupting magnetosphere calculations.
    • Short-path handling now works across supported platforms; when a shorter path cannot be created, the original path is retained.
  • Tests
    • Magnetosphere checks now run in more test environments, expanding coverage of weather-related calculations.
  • Chores
    • Extended the project setup step’s timeout in the automated test workflow.

Move the over-long path mapping into a process-wide DirectoryMapper
in Path, exposed as aTryGetShortPath(). SpiceAPI keeps using it for
kernels; IGRF now maps its data directory too, since
SetCurrentDirectoryW rejects paths beyond MAX_PATH - 2. Drop the
CI-only skips from the magnetosphere tests and cap the dependency
install step at 60 minutes.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared temporary directory aliases for short-path handling. SpiceAPI and Windows IGRF use the helper for long paths. Magnetosphere tests no longer skip outside GitHub CI, and a workflow step has a 60-minute timeout.

Changes: Short-path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Directory alias mapping
src/AstUtil/Platform/Path.hpp, src/AstUtil/Platform/Path.cpp
Adds cached directory aliases using junctions on Windows or symbolic links on POSIX. Adds short-path functions and cleanup for the alias root.
Short-path consumers
src/AstCore/Data/SpiceAPI.hpp, src/AstCore/Data/SpiceAPI.cpp, src/AstWeather/Magnetosphere/igrf/igrf.cpp
SpiceAPI converts paths to CRT encoding and tries short paths for paths over 255 characters. Windows IGRF tries a short path when its absolute data-directory path exceeds MAX_PATH - 2.
Magnetosphere test coverage
test/weather/testMagnetosphere.cpp
The igrf13, aep8, igrf, and get_flux tests no longer skip outside GitHub CI.

Workflow timeout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration step timeout

The short-path helper likely does not compile on Windows, which is the platform it targets. It can also return an alias to the wrong directory after the working directory changes. Filesystem errors can crash the process instead of falling back to the original path. The CI workflow also lacks explicit token permissions. Fix these before merging.

Apply the same long-path handling to igrf_field.

igrf_field builds the same datadir and changes the working directory into it. It does not use the MAX_PATH - 2 check that this PR adds to igrf. On Windows with a long data-directory path, igrf_field still fails in SetCurrentDirectoryW. This is the failure the PR fixes for igrf.

Extract the Windows block into a shared helper and call it from both functions.

Fix the -Werror=effc++ build failure: initialize mutex_ with a default member initializer.

The xmake -ay Linux arm64 job fails at Line 347. DirectoryMapper() = default; leaves mutex_ without an initializer, and -Werror=effc++ turns that warning into an error. SpiceAPI already uses std::mutex mutex_{}; for the same reason.

Fix the Windows map insertion.

shortPathAliases_ stores std::string keys and values, but this call passes two fs::path objects. On Windows, fs::path uses std::wstring as its native string type, so this cannot construct the map entry and the Windows build fails. (en.cppreference.com)

Use path.string() and aliasDir.string(), or store fs::path objects in the map.

Key aliases by resolved absolute paths.

The cache uses the original path spelling before fs::absolute() runs at Line 405. If a relative path is mapped under one current directory and the process changes its current directory, the same relative path returns the old directory's alias. SpiceAPI::makeSpicePath() passes its input directly to this helper, so relative inputs are not excluded.

Resolve and normalize the path before the cache lookup. Use that resolved path for both the cache key and alias target.

Handle cleanup errors without throwing.

Both fs::remove_all() calls use the throwing overload. A stale alias root that cannot be removed causes getShortPath() to throw instead of using the documented fallback. The same exception from releaseShortPathAliases() can escape the noexcept destructor and terminate the process.

Use the std::error_code overload and preserve the fallback behavior when cleanup fails.

Path.cpp uses fs:: and aWarning without including the headers that
declare them; include them directly.

Default-initialize mutex_ in its declaration, which is what
-Werror=effc++ on the GCC/MinGW builds wants.

Key aliases by absolute path.

The cache uses path.string() as its key, but the alias targets fs::absolute(path).
