I'd intended that no functional changes occur as part of this change, but some of the largesets tests started to fail: on closer inspection, there were a number of utf-8 files that were placed in the ascii directory: they were misclassified and the previous logic considered them to be validly ascii when they were actually utf-8. I don't see precisely where this change in behavior originates from, but I suspect that it is to do with some name canonicalization. My resolution here is to move those test files to the utf-8 directory as they are now correctly classified. The material changes in this commit are the definitions of the various Encoding instances and the corresponding alias maps. The rest of the changes are largely mechanical consequence of moving from strings to &Encoding. refs: https://github.com/nickspring/charset-normalizer-rs/issues/38 --- src/enc.rs | 634 Both implementations exist in the code and the results of both can be compared by changing an `if false` to `if true`. When I do that, a single windows-1255 test case has a discrepancy, which is due to encoding_rs's implementation accepting the input file. I think that this is acceptable and reasonable. I'll remove encoding in a follow up commit. refs: https://github.com/nickspring/charset-normalizer-rs/issues/38 --- Cargo.lock | 1 + Cargo.toml | 1 + src/enc.rs | 218 Unbounded cache size is undesirable as it presents as a potential attack surface if the detector is operating on data coming in from the network: an attacker could generate poison content consisting of all possible unicode codepoints across a series of otherwise innocuous messages to gradually consume the memory on the system. This commit switches it to be a fixed size cache, equal to the initial reserved capacity that was in use prior to this change. --- src/md/structs.rs | 6 +++--- 1 file changed, 3 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/md/structs.rs b/src/md/structs.rs index e6e0a90..dbb43c0 100644 --- a/src/md/structs.rs +++ b/src/md/structs.rs @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ use bitflags::bitflags; This commit adjusts to use the more complex streaming decode api from encoding_rs so that we can set an upper bound on memory usage when operating in validation only mode. FWIW, this change has no measurable impact on the results of running the performance tests. --- src/enc.rs | 160 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++----------- 1 file changed, 127 insertions(+), 33 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/enc.rs b/src/enc.rs index d4545af..7b22d03 100644 --- a/src/enc.rs +++ b/src/enc.rs @@ -197,45 +197,21 @@ impl Encoding { loop { let chunk = &input[begin_offset..end_offset]; - let mut decoder = enc.new_decoder(); - - // TODO: it should be technically possible to cap the buffer - // size when WantDecode::No, but it means using a slightly - // more complex decoder method and state tracking than we - // are currently - let mut result_string = String::with_capacity( - decoder - .max_utf8_buffer_length_without_replacement(input.len()) - .unwrap_or(0), - ); - - let is_last = true; - let (result, consumed) = decoder.decode_to_string_without_replacement( - chunk, - &mut result_string, - is_last, - ); - - match result { - DecoderResult::InputEmpty if is_last => { - return match want_decode { - WantDecode::Yes => Ok(result_string), - WantDecode::No => Ok(String::new()), - } - } - DecoderResult::InputEmpty => return Err("more input needed".to_string()), - DecoderResult::OutputFull => { - return Err("result buffer not big enough".to_string()) - } - DecoderResult::Malformed(len, consumed_after) => { + match decode_buffer(enc, chunk, want_decode) { + BufferResult::Decoded(result) => return Ok(result), + BufferResult::Adjust { + begin, + end, + consumed, + } => { let mut terminate = false; match is_chunk { IsChunk::Yes => { if consumed <= 1 { // Bad sequence at the start - begin_offset += (len + consumed_after).max(1) as usize; + begin_offset += begin; } else { - end_offset = end_offset.saturating_sub(1); + end_offset = end_offset.saturating_sub(end); } if end_offset - begin_offset < 1 @@ -264,6 +240,124 @@ impl Encoding { } } +enum BufferResult { + Decoded(String), + Adjust { + consumed: usize, + begin: usize, + end: usize, + }, +} + +/// Decode or, if WantDecode::No, validate the decode of, buffer. +/// If the decode is successful, returns either the decoded buffer +/// or an empty string depending on WantDecode. +/// If the decode fails, returns an Adjust variant indicating +/// how much was consumed and where to adjust the buffer if IsChunk +/// is being used. +fn decode_buffer( + encoding: &'static encoding_rs::Encoding, + mut chunk: &[u8], + want_decode: WantDecode, +) -> BufferResult { + let mut decoder = encoding.new_decoder(); + + const CHUNK_SIZE: usize = 2048; + let mut buffer_bytes = [0u8; CHUNK_SIZE]; + let buffer: &mut str = std::str::from_utf8_mut(&mut buffer_bytes[..]).unwrap(); + let mut bytes_in_buffer = 0usize; + let mut result_string = String::new(); + let mut consumed = 0usize; + + loop { + let (result, read, written) = + decoder.decode_to_str_without_replacement(chunk, &mut buffer[bytes_in_buffer..], false); + + consumed += read; + bytes_in_buffer += written; + + match result { + DecoderResult::InputEmpty => { + break; + } + DecoderResult::OutputFull => { + match want_decode { + WantDecode::Yes => { + result_string.push_str(&buffer[..bytes_in_buffer]); + } + WantDecode::No => {} + } + bytes_in_buffer = 0; + chunk = &chunk[read..]; + continue; + } + DecoderResult::Malformed(len, consumed_after) => { + if consumed <= 1 { + // Bad sequence at the start + return BufferResult::Adjust { + begin: (len + consumed_after).max(1) as usize, + end: 0, + consumed, + }; + } else { + return BufferResult::Adjust { + begin: 0, + end: 1, + consumed, + }; + } + } + } + } + // Flush any buffered output if needed + match want_decode { + WantDecode::Yes => { + loop { + let (result, _, written) = decoder.decode_to_str_without_replacement( + b"", + &mut buffer[bytes_in_buffer..], + true, + ); + bytes_in_buffer += written; + // Write the current buffer out and consider the buffer empty. + // Need to do this here for both `match` arms, because we exit the + // loop on `DecoderResult::InputEmpty`. + result_string.push_str(&buffer[..bytes_in_buffer]); + bytes_in_buffer = 0usize; + + match result { + DecoderResult::InputEmpty => { + // Done!
