ARIA: aria-checked attribute
The aria-checked attribute indicates the current "checked" state of checkboxes, radio buttons, and other widgets.
Note: Where possible use an HTML element with type="checkbox" and type="radio" as these have built in semantics and do not require ARIA attributes.

So the initial section is nested away from all the other sections, together with an aside and h1 which are probably getting thrown away, and then I expect that the scoring algorithm ends up preferring the pile of other content in a single container, and ancestor scoring (where the score is reduced by some divisor) means that the main container that has all the content (including the then-probably singly-nested initial para in its content-section) loses out.

I'm not really sure how best to fix something like this. There are more websites that do this for the initial paragraph (IIRC CNN used to for a while use an h2 for a whole para or something), so perhaps something generic enough could be done to cater to this situation... but it's definitely a bit tricky given how the algorithm works.
