Suggesting ChronoVerify for the toolkit. I built the tool and have included its limitations below so the editors can assess it independently.
URL
https://chronoverify.com
Description
Free web verifier for image provenance and capture time. It validates C2PA Content Credentials against the official C2PA trust lists, reads EXIF and XMP capture metadata (including GPS when present), and runs classical pixel forensics, returning one verdict with a confidence score and a per-signal breakdown. It works on any image, signed or not, by upload or URL. It is a C2PA Conformant Validator listed on the C2PA Conforming Products List, and each check can optionally mint a shareable verdict permalink for citation.
Cost
The web verifier is free with no account. A pay-as-you-go developer API exists but is not needed for toolkit use.
Level of difficulty
Beginner. Upload an image or paste a URL, then read the verdict and the signal breakdown.
Requirements
A modern browser. No account or installation. Images up to 40 megapixels (JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and similar).
Limitations
- It is not an AI-image or deepfake detector. It verifies what the file carries (provenance and metadata); it does not guess how an image was made. Absence of Content Credentials is not evidence that an image is AI-generated or fake.
- Most social platforms strip metadata on upload, so images saved from social media typically return an inconclusive verdict. Check the original file when it can be obtained.
- Pixel forensics flag some manipulations but read inconclusive on most real-world edits. Treat results as triage that points at internal evidence, not as proof of authenticity.
- C2PA validation covers still images only, not video or audio.
